About Yaralla Estate

Yaralla House at Yaralla Estate

Yaralla House, the main house at Yaralla Estate, gained additions by John Sulman from 1893 to 1899. The whole estate is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register, and much conservation work has been carried out on the house and its grounds in recent decades. The Governor-General stayed at Yaralla from 1912 to 1914. The grounds also hold a private pet cemetery, and Dame Eadith Walker Hospital occupies part of the estate.

Gardens and Grounds at Yaralla Estate

Yaralla Estate has formal gardens that include a rose garden, a picking garden, a rockery and an Italian lawn terrace. A driveway lined with brush box trees leads to the estate's inner gates. The grounds also take in grazing fields, a tennis court and croquet green, and a former swimming pool that is now filled in as lawn. Eadith Walker built a squash court on the estate for a visit by the Prince of Wales in 1920.

Guided Tours at Yaralla Estate

Guided tours of Yaralla Estate start at The Dairy, about 150 metres from the inner gate, and involve more than 1 km of walking with few places to sit, rest or find shade. Grass, sloping terrain and uneven paving mean the full tour can't be completed in a wheelchair or with a walking aid. Parts of the route, and two of the three main display sites, are on reasonably level paving, and vehicles can be driven closer to The Dairy for visitors who can't manage the walk. Volunteers at the inner gate help visitors get around.
