History of Marriott Street Reserve
Marriott Street Reserve is part of the site of John Baptist's nursery, which operated from the 1830s to the 1900s. Baptist, a Portuguese man, arrived in Sydney as a free man in 1829 and grew vegetables for sale before moving to ornamental plants, advertising seedlings and bulbs across Australia and New Zealand. His son ran the business until 1885, when it was leased to the Shepherd family of the Darling nursery in Chippendale. The nursery covered most of East Redfern and was not subdivided until the 1900s, and many local streets, including Boronia Street, were named after it.
Planned Upgrade for Marriott Street Reserve
The City of Sydney has proposed an upgrade for Marriott Street Reserve with enclosed play spaces featuring a tower and slide, a double swing or basket swing, and a nature play area with sandstone boulders, platform decks and stepping stones. The design would move paths to improve access and safety, upgrade lighting, and improve the lawn and drainage. New low seating, barrier walls, seats, tables and a bubbler are also proposed, and all existing mature trees would be protected. Public consultation has closed and the project is under review.
