About Shiprock Aquatic Reserve
Shore Diving at Shiprock Aquatic Reserve
Shiprock Aquatic Reserve is entered on foot through a small cove, with an 18 metre drop-off right off the shore. A bubble cave sits on a flat rock on the floor about 20m from the wall. Tropical species sometimes arrive on the East Australian Current, and the reef also hosts decorator crabs, soft sponges, bommies, schooling fish and pineapple fish. A light helps bring out the colour of the reef.
Protection Rules at Shiprock Aquatic Reserve
Shiprock Aquatic Reserve has been a no-take reserve since it was declared in 1982, so fishing by any method is prohibited. Harming marine life, feeding fish and collecting marine organisms, including empty shells, are also not permitted. A large no-fishing sign stands at the site, although boat fishers may not see it. Illegal fishing can be reported to the Fishers Watch Phoneline on 1800 043 536, and water pollution to the Environment line on 131 555.

Visitor tips for Shiprock Aquatic Reserve
- โDive only at high tide, because the site is very tidal and swimming against the current is not possible at other times.
- โCarry a dive flag, since the reserve lies in a shipping channel, and surface in the shallow 5m area near the shoreline rather than in the channel.
- โWear gloves at the exit, because oysters grow on rocks just under the surface.
- โKeep gear noise low when walking to the water, as the area is residential.
