About John Weir Reserve
Memorial at John Weir Reserve
John Weir Reserve is named after John Graham Weir MBE, a community leader who served as President of the Kurnell Progress Association for 25 years. The reserve was gazetted in October 2000, and the memorial to Weir was unveiled there in March 2001 together with a time capsule. The memorial is the reserve's main commemorative feature and gives it a direct link to the community history of Kurnell.
Aboriginal Artwork Pathway at John Weir Reserve
John Weir Reserve has a curved concrete pathway that runs around the memorial. Ceramic tiles decorated with Aboriginal artwork by Joe Hurst are set into the concrete, so the artwork is part of the walkway itself and can be viewed while moving around the memorial. The pathway combines a commemorative memorial with Aboriginal artistic heritage in a single space, and it is one of the reserve's most distinctive features.
Gateway Signage at John Weir Reserve
John Weir Reserve sits at the entrance to Kurnell village and serves as the village's gateway. In 2020, new gateway signage was installed at the reserve to mark the 250th anniversary of the first contact between Gweagal people and Lieutenant Cook's crew. The signage gives the reserve a historical marker at the village entrance, linking it to the area's significant history.
