About Mermaids Cave Recreation Reserve

Sandstone Cave and Waterfall at Mermaids Cave Recreation Reserve

Mermaids Cave Recreation Reserve has an undercut sandstone cave, the reserve's best-known landmark. Pulpit Creek feeds a cascading waterfall at creek level, which gives the glen a tranquil setting. The glen is lush and fern-filled, with native sassafras trees and towering cliff faces. Birdlife, including the superb lyrebird, is often heard echoing through the gorge. The cave also has film history: a scene from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome was filmed there.
