Across the water, the reserve looks towards Milsons Point and Luna Park, and the Sydney Opera House is visible across the harbour. A nearby elevator links the reserve to the bridge's pedestrian walkway. Dawes Point Reserve is a vantage point for the New Year's Eve fireworks, and bridge photography is one of its main draws.
Dawes Point Battery Remains at Dawes Point Reserve
Dawes Point Reserve contains the archaeological remains of the former Dawes Point Battery, a fortified position built in 1788 to protect Sydney Cove. The remains include cannons, a guard house, officer's quarters and underground store rooms. Lieutenant William Dawes set up an observatory on the point, which fell out of use by 1791.
