About Liverpool Pioneers' Memorial Park
Historic Headstones at Liverpool Pioneers' Memorial Park
Liverpool Pioneers' Memorial Park was formerly the Old Liverpool Cemetery, and burials there closed in 1958. Liverpool City Council redeveloped the site in 1974, and the official opening took place on Saturday 20th April, 1974, by the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Roden Cutler V.C. Headstones dated before 1850, and those of historical interest, are retained in the park, and some moved headstones are re-erected in various structures throughout the park. A plaque on a building lists the names of people buried in the park, as far as can be ascertained. Notable burials include James Badgery, after whom Badgerys Creek is named, Reverend Robert Cartwright, first Minister of St Luke's Church, and Richard Sadlier, the first Mayor of Liverpool.
