About Glenbrook Lagoon Reserve

The Spring-Fed Lagoon at Glenbrook Lagoon Reserve

Glenbrook Lagoon Reserve centres on a lagoon covering 7 hectares, fed by natural springs and surrounding water flow. The lagoon has an average depth of 2.7 metres and reaches 4.05 metres at its deepest point. Lapstone Creek flows out of the lagoon on its east side. The lagoon is one of only three lagoons of this kind in the Hawkesbury catchment. The reserve sits 10 km west of Penrith and 3.8 km from the Nepean River.

Wildlife at Glenbrook Lagoon Reserve

Glenbrook Lagoon Reserve has reed-edged water where swamp hens and other native wetland birds shelter. Frogs at the reserve include Peron's tree frog, the striped marsh frog and the eastern dwarf tree frog. Eastern long-necked turtles and Sydney basin turtles also live here. The lagoon holds freshwater catfish, Australian smelt, flat-headed gudgeon and long-finned eel, and native bladderwort grows in the water. Stands of large mature eucalypts and Angophora trees shade the reserve and give it a bushland character.

Heritage and Restoration at Glenbrook Lagoon Reserve

Glenbrook Lagoon Reserve is listed on the NSW heritage register. The remains of the Ellis family cottage stand about 100 metres north of the lagoon. Blue Mountains City Council began a restoration project at the reserve in 2006, and bushcare groups still carry out regeneration work there. The reserve is recognised both as a nature reserve and as a historical tourist attraction and bush walking site.
